Aircraft Maintenance
AMIS (Aircraft Maintenance System) module provides functionality related
to various maintenance and engineering needs of the entire United Airlines
fleet including providing Operation Support and Performance Monitoring.
Various aspects of Checks and Servicing requirements based on "flight
cycles" (e.g. take off/touch down cycles, push back cycles etc.) and conditional
monitoring of each individual part forms the core of the system. An online
update facility also allows the flight/in-flight crew to issue various
alerts to ground stations to proactively handle any major or minor maintenance
requirements of an ongoing flight resulting in optimal fleet usage.
Flight Planning
AFPAM (Flight Planning) module allows the monitoring of flight progress
and for managing flight plans based upon factors such as take-off weight/thrust
requirement/ performance history of an aircraft. International/domestic
weather feeds provide dynamic route management, both for "flight in progress"
and "about to take-off" flights. In the near future a new capability is
to be provided to the pilots to have "enroute weather" information available
in various ground stations all over the globe. An online NOTAM (Notice
to Airmen) facility keeps the flight crew updated on various exigencies
(e.g. sudden declaration of "no-fly zones") so that they can manage their
flight routes more effectively and on-the-fly.
Cargo
The CARGO module (both Cargo shipment and Mail) provides functionality
related to Sales and Inventory Management, Ramp Services and Freight Accounting.
These takes into account not only air/land freight management/accounting
but also various international Customs and quarantine requirements. In
1998, United's Cargo division accounted for US $913m in revenue, flying
nearly 3 billion cargo ton miles making it the largest passenger/ cargo
carrier in the U.S. An airline has a capability to communicate between
ground and air via NOTAM (notice to airmen) messages to dynamically manage
the flight plans. Tata Infotech enhanced this messaging application thereby
helping United Airlines to provide superior flight planning capabilities.
Over the past several months, Tata Infotech has teamed with United Airlines
in several UNIMATIC related enhancement projects. Tata Infotech has partnered
with United Airlines in providing development and support capability for
UNIMATIC since 1997. Tata Infotech's offshore development center is connected
to the system in Chicago via a dedicated 64 Kbps satellite link. Tata
Infotech's offshore team in India blends into and functions as an extension
of United Airline's team in Chicago. Onsite coordinators, located in Chicago,
facilitate workflow, status reporting and answers to clarifications required.
Tata Infotech's knowledge of the Airline industry, coupled with its offshore
Project Methodology allows us to provide maintenance services for mission
critical systems. At a strategic level, this allows United Airlines to
retool their employees' skills and use them for initiatives that help
grow their business.
