Rapidly an entirely new economy is forming in front of our eyes, an economy
based on network-centricity. As with any profound change, new rules will
be required. Companies that have the best chances for success in this
new economy will either learn the rules quickly or, better yet, help create
these rules.
"Dot.com" is a shorthand way of expressing a concept that will represent
the future Network Economy. This concept is based on adopting a new way
of thinking-net-centric thinking-and applying it to the way organisations
do business. It involves moving core business processes to an open architecture
based on Internet standards. This kind of thinking will soon have to permeate
IT architectures, business processes, relationships with partners and
suppliers, value chains, and many other aspects of business. The rules
have yet to be codified and are likely to evolve, like the fast-moving,
forward-thinking companies that will help create them. We have developed
ten predictions about the rules in this new economy.
--There
are 67,000 new internet users/day
--350M internet users by 2002
--10,000 new websites/week
--Half a Billion mobile phone users by 2000.
# of email messages
a day
--300 million by 1995
--3.5 Billion by 1998
--1.3 Trillion by 2002
--Radio took 59 years to reach 50 Million users
--TV took 33 years to reach 100 Million users
--Internet took 4 years to reach 150 Million users

what WalMart took 15 years with 78 stores.
--14% of Stock trades in the US are executed online. |
The
three trends that form the foundation for ten predictions outlined
in the rest of this article:
--The Web will be available to everyone, with the reliability of today's
telephone dial tone.
--Innovation in the new economy will occur in a post-proprietary world.
--Nearly every aspect of business will fundamentally be a matter of
service. |
