Tax and Revenue

Case 1 - Revenue Department for a large State in USA

Case 2 - Revenue Department for a city in USA

Case 1:
Customer: Revenue Department for a large State in USA
Technology: COBOL, Mapper and Oracle on Unisys 2200 and DEC

The Customer

The Department of Revenue, is responsible for collecting various taxes for the State.

The Challenge

The Department of Revenue had applications developed on Unisys 2200 and DEC, written in COBOL, Mapper and Oracle. The applications had to get renovated for the Year 2000 and beyond.

The Solution

Tata Infotech with Unisys Corporation was awarded the contract. Although Unisys had partnered with another company, DDI, for the assessment of the department's 2200 Cobol and Mapper applications, they chose to bring in Tata Infotech to introduce the High Level Renovation Planning phase to the department in September 1996. Tata Infotech proactively helped the department to define the Renovation Plan. Our continued involvement and commitment to the department and timely completion of this planning phase laid the foundation for winning a sizable bid to renovate about 5.6 million lines of code on a fixed price basis.

The applications were renovated using a phased approach. The impact assessment phase and final testing phases of the project were carried out at USA, while the Renovation phase was carried out in India. During the offshore phases, Unisys 2200 and DEC were accessed via a 64 KBPS communication line that was set up between Tata Infotech's development location in India and the department in US.

Tata Infotech delivered several million lines of code which was accepted on or ahead of schedule. The department also hired Tata Infotech consultants on a Time and Material basis for the post delivery phases of the project which involved testing and implementation.

A team of 40-50 consultants worked on the project for a period of one year.

Benefits to the Customer

  • Application Renovated much before the Year 2000 deadline
